Tips for Writing a Condolence Message

Tips for Writing a Condolence Message

Many of our customers appreciate suggestions as to how they might express their support on the gift card that accompanies the condolence gift they are sending.  The following info should help.

A list of appropriate and warm sympathy sayings has been compiled by Enid Traisman of the Dove Lewis Pet Loss Support Program in Portland, OR.  This may serve as a guideline for composing your own condolence message.  Feel free to combine phrases and write what feels natural and comfortable to you.  The person receiving the note, be it a loved one, friend or client is going to appreciate that you are acknowledging their grief and honoring their loss.

Think about expressing three ideas in your message:

  1. Acknowledge the loss
  2. Include a memory of the deceased or an experience you may have had with him or her.
  3. Extend your sympathy

Feel free to use, adapt or combine these phrases:

  • You are in my thoughts.

  • Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

  • We are thinking of you.

  • We are thinking of you during this difficult time.
