Tips on Writing a Pet Loss Condolence Note

We each experience grieving in our own way... there is no right or wrong way. And while you may want to comfort someone who has lost a pet, you might not be sure about what to say in a condolence note.

Included with our Pet Remembrance Frame Gift Package we offer to add a personal message on the accompanying gift card. When asked, some customers tell me, "I just don't know what to say".

When you need to write a sympathy note, think about expressing 3 ideas:

Acknowledge their loss:
"I'm so sorry to hear about your loss. Trooper was such an amazing dog and I know how much he meant to you."
Include a memory you had with the pet (if possible):
"I will always remember our trips to the beach and how happy he was playing in the surf."

      Extend your sympathy:
"I'm thinking of you at this very difficult time and send my sincere sympathy."

Here are some other ideas from Simple Sympathy.

Your message should be brief.  Pet sympathy card messages can be a simple line or two about your favorite memory of the pet.  You might say something like "I remember when you first brought Maggie home, she was such a cute puppy."

You can also mention one of the animal’s positive or lovable traits, for example:
      “Toby was a great friend.”
Some other pet attributes you might want to use are:

      • a joy to be around
      • a loyal companion
      • a comforting presence
      • a faithful friend
      • a cheerful presence
